I’m Tickled “Green”!

May-10-2010 By Barbara Zak

OK, so it does take some time and effort to be a conscientious recycler. However, in most areas there are now recycle depots, that make the job much easier. Yes, most Waste Management, facilities offer single stream pick-up , which for those of us who pay for that convenience, it means no more separating our trash.

We have always had our own system, and chosen not to pay the near $40 a month, for garbage pick-up. The one peeve, that has always bothered me though, is the menace of, “What About Styrofoam?”

Thankfully, Marilyn Lauderdale of Kent WA, asked herself the same question.

“Somebody needs to do this. Why not me?”

The “this” that is the question, is figuring out how to keep the untold thousands of pounds of expanded polystyrene foam (eps) – better known by the trademark name, Styrofoam – out of landfills. Read the rest of this entry »

If You Can’t Reuse it- Don’t Buy It!

Apr-17-2010 By Barbara Zak

While out blog-hopping last night, I came across this fantastic article over at Recycled Frockery. With Earth Day being next week, on April 22nd, I knew I just had to share it.
It is a bout re-purposing with plastic bottles.

I found this fascinating quote today:

I must admit that I’ve seen other green building projects and bottle buildings, but this is by far the largest and the nicest yet.  The spacious design makes it usable over a long period for many purposes.  The design takes into account the strength and flexibility factors needed in hurricane and earthquake prone areas. That’s why this is the ideal building material. It glitters, flexes and breathes. People could be making these all over the world, if only we used more of our recyclables for repurposing.recycledfrockery.com, Fantastique !, Apr 2010

You should read the whole article. It’s awesome!

In case you missed it when you visited  that post, don’t forget to stop at Bottleschool.com – they teach building with bottles.

It would be great if we gave more thought to what we throw away.  Or better yet, if we could gather up the floating heap of bottles in the middle of the ocean, and use them for great causes like this.  Then, we would really be making a clean difference in the world! However, keeping any more bottles from entering the landfills or waterways, is a huge step toward many more green tomorrows!
