Are You Dreaming About Owning a Prius?

Aug-21-2012 By Barbara Zak

Well, now’s the time to get out there and get one. During the month of August, there is a massive August Prius Blowout sale going on.   The Prius debuted in 2001, at the new edge of design and technology. It’s powered by a hybrid electric motor that is paired up to a gasoline engine-so you have power when you need it.  The units are designed to work together in tandem or individually, allowing you to earn great fuel economy while producing next to NO carbon emissions.

Unlike many of the other subcompacts Prius is roomy and qualifies as a midsize sedan. It comfortably seats four adults, while offering a smooth ride, and it can be loaded with just about any high tech features you can imagine. For the environmentally conscious family or individual looking to enjoy the outdoors and conserve fuel- the Prius is your answer to achieving both goals.  Over time owning a Prius, or just about any Toyota, saves you money, while offering you unparalleled fuel economy. I previously owned a Toyota Carola, and loved it. My BIL, owns a 2010 Prius, and loves the fuel economy he gets on freeway driving.

The Prius first went on the market in Japan in 1997, as the first mass produced hybrid vehicle. It was then introduced worldwide in 2000, and is now sold in over 70 countries.  The 2 million sold milestone was reached in September of 2010.

Toyota expanded the Prius family to include Prius-v an extended roomy hatchback wagon, and the Prius-c toyota prius c special offers a subcompact hatchback in 2011, and this year they have added a Plugin Hybrid to the family of Prius choices. With at least five different choices of the Prius and a nationwide blowout sale, now’s the time to scoop up on the value at your nearest Toyota dealership.

The Powerhouse in Your Pantry

Jul-18-2012 By Barbara Zak

It’s been awhile since I posted about Green Spring Cleaning Agents, but the truth is, vinegar is quite the unleashed powerhouse in your pantry, that you can use anytime, and in so many ways.
Vinegar

If you use Vinegar for cleaning, it doesn’t matter what kind you use, except for Brown (apple cider) Vinegar, which is more for eating and your health.  It is known to stain porous materials, so therefore, white distilled vinegar is the wisest to use for cleaning purposes.  So, make smart choices and use vinegar wisely!

Do you know what all vinegar can do?  It serves a purpose in just about every room of the house. There are also dozens of household and personal use products that vinegar can replace, saving you money. Best of all, it’s cheaper, better for the environment, and better for your health and home, because it eliminates harsh and unnecessary chemicals.

Vinegar, in general is a natural, powerful and inexpensive disinfectant. It can be used on almost anything except marble, and porous materials.

You can make a great all purpose cleaner by mixing 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water.  Or, I often pair it  straight with baking soda and use it to clean my bathroom tubs and sinks. This combo also works great to unclog a drain, or clean your oven and drip pans. For this job, it is best to let it rest in the bottom of your oven overnight, no muss, no fuss, and NO harmful fumes.

Here are a few more of my favorite uses for vinegar. Hard water stains and mineral deposits like those that are often found behind your faucet are stubborn and hard to remove. Take a cloth soaked in vinegar and place it on the hard water stain or mineral deposit for a few hours. Then wipe clean with a soft dry cloth.

Clean your coffee maker, washing machine or dishwasher by running vinegar through it, followed by two rinses of water. It reduces soap buildup, mineral deposits, and scale and keeps everything in great working order.

I love this one- to remove labels from glass jars,  just saturate the labeled area in vinegar and scrape the stickiness right off. No more sticky residue.

Clean and crisp up your veggies by soaking them in a mixture of cold water and a tablespoon or so of vinegar. Bugs lingering on your produce will be whisked away, and your limp celery will come to life again.

Eliminate onion odor off your hands by rinsing them in vinegar. This also  works with other smelly parts of your body, such as your underarms and feet.

To eliminate smoke odor in a room, put a bowl of vinegar near the source. Let sit overnight in a closed room. If you would like to reduce icky smells throughout your house, but would rather not have the  room smell like vinegar, try adding some fragrant spices to your bowl of vinegar and leave it in the warmest corner of the room. Next day the smoke odors will be gone!

For personal use, vinegar will also remove soap scum and buildup from your hair. Rinse with a pitcher filled with ½ a cup of warm water and ½ a cup of vinegar ( I like to use the apple cider vinegar in this application). Your hair will be shiny and free of buildup. This same treatment also works as an effective dandruff treatment. Just use a higher concentration of vinegar to water. You should notice improvement in about two weeks.

As an acne treatment, just apply equal parts vinegar and water to problem areas. Using vinegar as a facial toner, is a great and inexpensive alternative to using harsh alpha hydroxy based products, that are often drying and irritating to the skin. Vinegar, is also effective in taking the sting out of a sunburn. Use the same type of dilution as for the hair rinse, only use cool water. You will find it to be quite soothing.

As you can see, there are these, and hundreds more uses for vinegar. When it comes to making home made cleaners, vinegar is by far the more economical choice. Most recipes make about a gallon, and you probably already have the ingredients on hand right now, in your pantry. For pennies, you can make your own, and there is no waste, and harsh chemicals involved. Once you start using vinegar, I’m quite certain you won’t go back to commercial cleaners again.  You’ll be green and save green, while your house is spotless.

If you prefer to buy ready made cleaners, look for brands such as Seventh Generation, Ecos, Simple Green, and the line of green cleaners from Clorox, just to name a few earth friendly alternatives.  Give vinegar a try though, and I think you will be surprised at the great job it does on just about everything. Together, we are working toward a better tomorrow.

Going Green on a Budget

May-3-2012 By Barbara Zak

Special Thanks to Amanda Green, for this guest post. Here are just 3 simple and easy tips, that will help you go green.  You can get started right NOW, and you don’t have to break the bank in the process.

Going Green on a Budget

by Amanda Green

Lately, I’ve noticed a huge increase in the number of small businesses in alternative energy fields. In the past month alone, I’ve received two phone calls regarding the potential adoption of solar technology in my home.

Aside from the obvious, if only minor, annoyance that such in-home solicitations cause, I’m also concerned about another potential problem associated with these types of green offerings. By reaching out to many Americans who are unable to afford the high initial costs of such technologies, they potentially shadow the smaller, much more cost-effective and simple green home solutions, that even folks with poor credit can and should employ.

Going green doesn’t have to be about spending inordinate amounts of money on big alternative energy solutions for the home.

Aside from the obvious financially helpful solutions like finding the right credit card for bad credit, Americans struggling with financial issues should be looking to much simpler green solutions around the house to save them money while also helping the environment.
The following are just three simple tips for saving money while going green at the same time.

Save on Energy Costs

-Set thermostat temperatures just a few degrees warmer in the summer and a few degrees cooler in the winter – you’d be surprised at how much this can save in annual energy costs.

-Install energy-efficient bulbs when your current ones go out – CFLs or LEDs are particularly energy-efficient and can save tons of money over time.

-Wash clothes in cold water when possible, and dry using a clothes line instead of a dryer.

-Turn all appliances and energy users off and unplug them when not in use, or use smart power strips to reduce energy use and costs.

Smart Checking

-If your account offers paperless checking, sign up – this not only helps reduce your impact on the environment, but can actually save you money by allowing you to check your statements more frequently online, ensuring beneficial spending habits and that you’re not being charged unnecessary fees.

-Read up on your account details and make sure you’re not incurring any usage fees –if you are, use a service to compare checking account fees and find one that better suits your needs that can save you money.

-Don’t pay for checking – there are plenty of free account options out there that can save you money while offering high quality service.

Save on Water Costs

-Take shorter showers – this will lower your water and heating bills considerably over time.

-Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators – these appliances are often relatively inexpensive and will save you tons of money on water and energy costs.

-Don’t buy bottled water – instead, use a water purifier that will save you money as well as eliminate the use of environmentally hazardous plastics.

-Use a reusable water bottle when traveling – aluminum or other non-plastic,non-toxic options are usually best.

While there are certainly a number of other ways to go green for less around the house, these three considerations are some of the easiest to get you started on the path to green savings and solutions. By doing just a bit of research one can find a huge number of green tips to save and use energy efficiently around the house.

Start today: you’ll be doing yourself, your family, the environment, and your bank account, a big favor. We’re working toward a better tomorrow!
