I received this added information direct from Earthship Biotecture, for your viewing and added information.  Please got to this link that will take you directly to their site :

An Earthship is a radically sustainable home made of recycled materials.

* Electricity is from the sun with solar panels and wind with wind modules.
* Water is caught on the roof from rain and snow melt.
* Sewage is treated on site in interior and external botanical planters.
* Heating and Cooling is from the sun and the earth.
* Food is grown inside and outside.

BTW, Michael Reynold is also committed to helping Haiti with disaster relief.  Here is the link for you to visit and donate if you choose.

As you may know, I use to live in a dome home.  I love browsing the web for alternative, affordable, and most importantly, sustainable ways to live.

Michael Reynolds, just might be this generations modern day Einstein, and new age, Frank Lloyd Wright all in one person.  For the last 35 years, he has been working on, and building what he calls Earthships, out of recycled materials.  He has been known as the Garbage Warrior, for his ideas of using garbage in the building process.  Therefore, it is better to put one of these dwellings, in remote areas, or pockets of freedom, such as New Mexico, or Montana.  In these areas no permits are required.

Take a look, and see if this just isn’t the most well thought out, wave of the green future you have ever seen!  Seems like all the bases are covered for living off- the grid!

    @ Linda,

You are very welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed this info! :)

  3. A. @ A Changing Life Said,

Amazing what a little ingenuity and lateral thinking can do. Do you mean that building permits aren’t needed in New Mexico and Montana at all? Anyone can build anything they like? In the UK, much more crowded of course, everything is very highly regulated and inspected. They can even make you pull something down if built without permission.

  4. Barbara Rae Said,

    @ A.@ A Changing Life,

In Taos, New Mexico, there is actually a community of Earthships, developed by Michael Reynolds. It is also, where the headquarters is located. And yes, in remote unpopulated areas such as there, and Montana, no permits are required. Hence, they are called pockets of freedom.

It does depend on state laws, as to what is, and is not allowed. In metropolitan areas permits are required, and such dwellings are not allowed, or it can take several years to acquire one if you are lucky, for something such as this.

Building permits for conventional housing, are usually issued in most states, within 30 days or less! :)

  5. Brad Said,

    Hi Barbara!

Hey, that’s pretty fascinating stuff. The systems are pretty ingenious and using the tires for the structural parts is quite something. If only tires were prettier! :)

  30. Barbara Said,

    @ optimization engine search,

Yes, I did know, that Frank Lloyd Wright, was not the most respected person, of his time.
I also, heard reports, that he was mean and hot tempered. However, he was on of those
people, with a brilliant mind. Not many, seem to dispute that!
